Scores of fires are burning uncontrolled throughout Australia amid a heatwave that has seen temperatures exceed 40C (104F) in each state.
Essentially the most harmful fires on Monday had been within the state of Victoria.
About 30,000 residents and vacationers had been urged to flee East Gippsland – a preferred vacation area – however evacuations had been later deemed too dangerous as fires encroached on main roads.
A volunteer firefighter died battling a blaze within the state of New South Wales.
The state’s premier, Gladys Berejiklian, described the loss of life as “heartbreaking”.
“Phrases fail at occasions like this,” she wrote on Twitter. Two others had been taken to hospital with burns after battling the blaze, east of the town of Albury. It’s believed their truck rolled over after being hit by excessive winds.
