How to Carry Out a Mac Backup

Back Up to iCloud

If you have iCloud set up on your Mac, you can transport all your data there.

To back up to iCloud, you’ll first have to check that your Mac is fully updated. You can do this by going to your Apple ID and clicking Updates. If there is an update, let that run through first.

If you don’t have updates, go to your Apple Menu and select System Preferences. From there, click on iCloud.

You’ll have to log in with your Apple ID and password. Accept the terms and conditions.

Next, you’ll have to decide what you want to store in your iCloud. You can store data, documents, photos, music, and even use the Find My Mac feature.

You’ll be able to see which apps can go into your iCloud account depending on how much storage everything will take. You only get a limited number of free gigabytes when you first sign up. If you’re going to regularly be backing up your computer to the iCloud, you may want to purchase more storage.

Once you’ve done that, you can tell iCloud which documents, photos, apps, or videos you want to be backed up. You can even schedule how often you want everything transferred.

Back Up to Time Machine

Once you set the Time Machine app up, it can perform backups of your computer routinely so you don’t have to worry about it. All you need to do is tell it where to store the backup.

Once you set the app up, it will create and store a backup every hour for the past day. It will keep doing this until the drive that you sent it to is full. Once it’s full, it will automatically delete the old backups in order to make way for the new ones.

To set up a drive, go into System Preferences, and find the category for Time Machine. Once you click on that, you can select the disk that you want to store your backups on.

However, you’ll need to make sure that you format the hard drive. Time Machine can do it for you, but keep in mind that it will erase everything that was on that drive.

There’s also an option that will let you Encrypt your backups. This means you’ll have to type in a password each time you want to access your information. This is a great option if you’re storing sensitive information, like personal info, health information, or passwords and usernames.

Next, select the check box that says Back up Automatically. However, if you go into the Options box, you’ll be able to exclude times you don’t want your machine to run in the background. This will help free up your Mac if you’re doing something taxing, like playing video games.

If you ever want to restore one of your backups, you can go into the Time Machine. You’ll see all of your backups look like a Rolodex. You can just scroll through all of them until you find the one you want. Then hit restore.

Clone Hard Disk

When you clone your system, you’re making a duplicate of all of the information. However, if you make a bootable clone, this backup will automatically start even if you’re having problems with your computer. This option is great if your computer has been shutting off by itself.

The Apple computer has a built-in Disk Utility that can create a clone image of your drive. However, you might want to get a third-party app that will actually back up your drive and make it a lot easier.

Like with Time Machine, you’ll be able to schedule backups, but you’ll have more customization and access to great features.

Back Up to External Drive

If you don’t want to follow any of those complicated steps, you can try backing everything up to an external drive.

The external drive could be as small as a flash drive or bigger. These are drives that don’t live inside your computer, so if you want to access the information on there, you have to plug it in.

However, you can buy these anywhere, and they often come with a lot of space. Instead of backing everything up automatically, you’ll have to go through and copy the files over onto that hard drive.

That way, if anything happens to your computer and its internal hard drive, you’ll still be able to access all of your old data by plugging in the external drive to a new computer.
