The next step after cleansing is to tone your face. This isn’t a must, but it’s a good step for adding in some additional replenishment. For example, if you suffer from redness and irritation, a rosewater toner is a good way to calm this down. In comparison, hyaluronic acid toners are great for adding firmness and glow to the face.

Like cleansers, it’s a case of finding the right toner for your skin. Toner can be applied with clean hands or on a cotton pad, and it can be applied day and night immediately after cleansing.


The final basic step of any skincare routine is moisturizing. This is an incredibly important step that many people, particularly those with oily skin, avoid. Whether you have oily or dry skin, you need to moisturize every day. Doing so could actually help your oily skin and encourage your skin to stop overproducing oil.

Moisturizing locks in water and keeps your skin looking plump, firm, and younger for longer. It should be done twice a day after toning. Like toners and cleansers, there are targeted moisturizers for different skin types and problems, so make sure you find one that is engineered for your skin type and that will complement your other skin regime products.


You can choose to add other elements to your skincare routine, such as topical serums and treatments for specific issues, but as a basis, the steps listed above should be included in everyone’s skincare routine. Don’t be tricked into completing a 20-step routine, most dermatologists agree that the steps above are mostly sufficient.
