Turkey has agreed to a ceasefire in northern Syria to let Kurdish-led forces withdraw, US Vice-President Mike Pence has introduced.
The event adopted talks in Ankara between Mr Pence and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
All navy operations will probably be paused for 5 days, and the US will assist facilitate an “orderly withdrawal” of Kurdish-led troops from what Turkey has termed a “protected zone” on the border.
Turkey launched its assault final week.
Its purpose was to push again from its border a Kurdish militia – the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) – that it views as a terrorist organisation.
Turkey had hoped to resettle as much as two million Syrian refugees within the space, however critics raised fears that might set off ethnic cleaning of the native Kurdish inhabitants.
