How to Start Your Own Blog

There’s no denying that starting your own blog can seem extremely intimidating and overwhelming, making you feel as though you’re a very small fish in a very large pond. Many marketing jobs require you to create blogs for companies, but there is an immense sense of pride and accomplishment that comes alongside creating your own. It’s never too late, or too early for that matter, to start your own blog. You’ll of course make mistakes in the initial stages, but these mistakes are extremely valuable, as you can use them to improve in the future. With this being said, how do you actually go about starting a blog from scratch?

Select a Name

First thing’s first, you must establish a blog name that is completely unique, as you won’t be able to have the same as anyone else. Similarly, you won’t be able to use any spaces or punctuation, aside from the dashes in the domain name. If you find that someone already has the blog name that you had in mind, you can attempt a different domain extension (e.g., .org or .net in place of .com). Otherwise, you might include small words such as “the”, “a”, or “my” to make it different from existing domains. Finally, you might add dashes in between words.

Register Your Blog

Once you’ve chosen your blog name, it’s time to get your blog online. Although this may sound quite technical, you only need two things in order to achieve this: blog hosting and blogging software – thankfully, these typically come together. As a rule of thumb, the host will register your domain for free, meaning that no one else will be able to take it. Additionally, you’ll usually be offered 30-day money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with the service that you’re receiving. Similarly, you’ll often be offered a free, automatic installation of the blogging software.

Customize Your Blog

The process of customizing your blog will depend on your blogging software but, usually, you’ll make changes from your dashboard. Here, you’ll be able to change the entirety of your layout with a few clicks of a button. Layouts will often be described as “themes” or even “appearance”. Unless you have a very specific design in mind, it’s a good idea to stick to one of their existing layouts, as this will allow for a clean design. If you’re not experienced in designing a webpage, this could result in a messy and cluttered layout that won’t bode well for your brand.

Write and Publish Your First Post

Once your blog is up and running, you can get going with what you started the blog for writing! Your blog will need to include some static content, including an “About Me/Us” page, a “Contact Me/Us” page, a disclaimer page, a privacy policy, and terms of service. In addition to this static content, you’ll need some dynamic content which will be the most important content that you have to offer, as this will make up your blog. After your first post, you should submit a weekly post, as huge intervals between posts won’t be successful in attracting an audience.

Promote Your Blog

Once you’ve got some content on the site, you can then start promoting your blog to attract readers. You should start by informing your friends, families, and colleagues, who may mention your blog to others, allowing you to reach wider audiences. Your next port of call is your social media platforms to inform your followers of new blog content. Be sure to make use of hashtags, as these will attract readers who don’t necessarily follow your social platform.
